Acting Department

Melinda Brink has shown an interest in acting since the ripe young age of 8. Under the tutelage of Shareen Swart, she started honing her skills at Starstruck School of Acting, which later became PALI, the Performing Arts Lifestyle Institute. Throughout her school years, Melinda participated in various school productions, including Nico Lewis’ Aku Vang ‘n Ster, in her Matric year, which landed her a bursary at The University of Free State, but she chose to finish her drama studies with Shareen Swart at PALI.

She also featured in a film, 5 Minutes Late, alongside Andre Velts, Kaz McFadden and Desiree Manthee Gardner. Since then, Melinda has performed in many student theatre productions including House of Clowns, The Crew, Katjie Kekkelbek, Kadawer, Kom Soos Jy Is alongside David Louw, Sean Brebnor and Herman Vorster, WAG, Girls, Wiele kos en Liefde and her one woman show in 2014, Die Kamer Bo, directed by Shareen Swart. In 2015, she did her second one woman show as Mornique in Fladder, written and directed by Kaz McFadden.  In 2017 she was part of the one-on-one theatre project DEURnis, performing Broei. DEURnis went to Aardklop and got nominated for best overall production. The same year she got the lead role in a play, The Social Disconnection, which won first prize in the PALI initiated Bang Bang Theatre Festival and later showcased at The Kievitskroon Finery Arts Festival.

As a director, Melinda directed Free Range Chickens with her high school students in 2014.  She was appointed as the PALI Youth acting coach in 2015 and in 2016 she was asked to direct the PALI theatre production, DALK.  In 2017 she had the opportunity to work under producer-director, Morne Lane, as dialogue coach for the film, Naamlose Woord, to be released in 2018. Morne was so impressed with Melinda’s unique directing style that he asked her to dialogue coach all the 2017 Bright Light Film Academy’s student films, Veratrum, Blomme vir Michelle and Afkop Anna. She also starred in the 24 hour shortfilm, Die Uitnodiging, directed by Morne Lane. Student films include Imaginary Friend, Huis Mandelein, (Een)saam, The Newcomer and Kruispad (2016) directed by Andre Velts.  Melinda is passionate about the art of acting, being an experienced actress herself, which allows her unique insight into drawing the most believable and honest performances from actors she works with as a coach.
